Pom Pom Winter Hat

I made for my sons and their friend. The one on the far left measures approx 9”-10” when laid flat. The other three measure approx 8” when laid flat. This pattern is for both sizes.

Materials
Hook = 6mm (UK)
Yarn = King Cole Pricewise main shade (from left to right) Surf, Purple, Royal and Larkspur. The yarn comes in 100g balls though only half of this (yarn A) is needed for the hat and no more than 25g for the pom pom and edging in another colour (yarn B).
Pom Pom maker
Tapestry needle

Finished size:  approx 16’’ (18”-19”)

Gauge: 1"x1"= 6 dc x 3 rows of dc

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
dec = decrease
* = pattern repeat

How to work a dc dec:
Put the yarn over the hook, then put the hook through the stitch and put the yarn over the hook again. Pull the yarn through the stitch, there should be three loops on the hook. Put the yarn over the hook and pull through two of the loops, put the yarn over the hook and instead of pulling it through the remaining two loops, you should put the hook through the next stitch and yarn over again. Pull the yarn through the stitch, there should be four loops on the hook. Put the yarn over the hook and pull through two loops, put the yarn over the hook again and pull through the remaining three loops.

Pattern:

Ch 3, join to first ch with sl st to make a ring.

Round 1: ch1, work 15dc in the middle of the ring. Join to first dc using sl st (15 stitches).

Round 2: ch1, work 2dc in the first and all other dc around (30).

Round 3: ch1, work 1 dc in the first dc, 2dc in the next. *1dc in the next, 2dc in the next*. Repeat from *. Join to first dc (45)

Round 4: ch1, *1dc in the first 2 dc, 2dc in the next dc*. Repeat from *. Join to first dc (60).

For the smaller hat only
Round 5: ch1, *1dc in the first 11 dc, 2dc in the next dc*. Join with first dc (65).

For the larger hat only
Round 5: ch1, *1dc in the first 3 dc, 2dc in the next*. Repeat from *. Join with first dc (75).

Round 6-7: c1, 1 dc in each dc. Join with first dc.

Rounds 8-10 will be decrease rounds. See the note above for instruction on how to do this.

Round 8: ch1, *1dc in the first 11 (13) dc. 1dc dec in the next dc*. Repeat from *. Join with first dc (60, 70).

Round 9: ch1, *1dc in the first 10 (12) dc, 1dc dec in the next dc*. Repeat from*. Join with first dc  (55, 65).

Round 10: ch1, *1dc in the first 9 (11) dc, 1 dc dec in the next dc*. Repeat from *. Join with first dc (50, 60).

Round 11-20: ch1, 1dc in each dc around. Join with first dc. Fasten off.

You can repeat rounds 11-20 if you wish to make the hat longer.

Edging

Turn the hat inside out and attach yarn B using a sl st.

Round 1: ch1, work 1sc in between each dc of the previous round (not the stitches). Join with the first sc. Fasten off.

Make the pom pom using yarn B and attach to the top of the hat.

Sew in any ends using tapestry needle.

For a PDF copy, click on the PDF Patterns tab at the top of the page.

Hook = 4mm (UK), G/6 (USA)

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
v sp = v space
sk = skip
* = pattern repeat

Pattern:
The multiple for this pattern is 7 + 5. E.g. if you want to have 20 V’s going across your pattern, multiply 20 by 7 and then add 5, this will give you the number of chains required to do this. (7 makes up 4dc and one V. The 5 makes up the 4dc at the beginning of the row and the ch1 used as a step up for the first dc)

Ch 107 (using shade A)
Row 1:  Work 1dc in the 2nd ch from the hook. 1dc in the next 3 ch.*sk next ch, 1dc in the next ch, ch1, work 1dc in same ch. sk next ch, 1dc in each of the next 4 ch*. Repeat from * to end. Turn.

Row 2: ch1, 1dc in the first 4 dc. *sk next dc, dc in v sp, ch1, dc in same v sp, sk next dc. 1dc in each of the next 4 dc*. Repeat from * to end. Fasten off

Row 3: Attach shade B to first dc using sl st. ch1, 1sc in first dc, 1sc in each dc and v sp across the row. Fasten off.

Row 4: Attach shade C to first sc using sl st. ch1, 1 dc in the first sc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sc. *sk next sc, 1 dc in the next sc, ch1, 1 dc in same sc, sk next sc. 1dc in each of the next 4 sc.* repeat from * to end. Turn

Row 5: Ch1, 1dc in first 4 dc, *sk next dc, 1dc in v sp, ch1, 1dc in same v sp, sk next dc. 1dc in each of the next 4 dc*. Repeat from * to end. Fasten off.

Rows 6-71: Repeat from row 3 alternating the colours used for the dc rows (shade B is always used for the sc rows)

Ends can be sewn in or crocheted over when working the edging.

Edging

Round 1: Attach shade B anywhere at the top of the blanket using a sl st. Work 1sc in same st, 1 sc in each dc and v sp across until the last dc of the row. Work 5sc in the last dc of the row (to make corner). Work 118sc evenly across the left side until the first ch at the bottom of the blanket. Work 5sc in first ch at the bottom (to make corner). 1 sc in each ch across the bottom until the last ch. 5sc in last chain (to make corner). Work 118sc evenly across the right side until the first dc of the top row. Work 5sc in the first dc of the row (to make corner). 1sc in each dc and v sp. join with first sc.

Round 2: Ch1, 1sc in same st, work 1sc in each sc and 3sc in the third sc of the corner st of round 1 around the entire blanket. Join with first sc. Fasten off. Sew in ends
